5 THINGS TO DO IF YOU ARE GOING TO ALICANTE
KNOWS THE MAJESTIC CASTLE OF SANTA BARBARA.
Located in the center of Alicante and situated on the top of a mountain called Benacantil, this amazing construction dating from the end of the 9th century has a viewpoint that offers the best views of the city.
Considered one of the largest and best-preserved medieval fortresses in Europe, it is a must-visit that will help us learn more about the fabulous history of this enclave.
It’s a pleasure to walk around their grounds in peace: La Torreta, El Salón Felipe II, El patio de Armas…
We can access the Castillo de Santa Barbara by car, quickly and easily employing an elevator dug into the rock from the beach of Postiguet, and if you have time, we recommend you access it by walking through the Barrio de Santa Cruz. (In the following point we will explain why) 😊
Don’t forget, before climbing the castle, to admire the face-shaped profile that can be seen on the mountain. Called “La Cara del Moro”, it is one of the most characteristic images of the city.
Traveling Tip: Go up to their lookout point at sunset. From there, the sunsets are… Unforgettable!
LIVE THE ATMOSPHERE OF THE BARRIO DE SANTA CRUZ.
Full of photogenic and narrow streets, this emblematic neighborhood is famous for housing, in addition to beautiful houses full of colorful pots that adorn the facades, a lively nightlife thanks to the many pubs that are located in the area.
Enjoying Alicante’s nightlife is a “must” of your visit to this town.
This typical little village makes up the old part of the city. With bohemian and artistic airs, in your route on foot, you will know buildings as important as:
- Concatedral de San Nicolás: The most important church of Alicante has, in its interior, an elegant cloister of gothic style.
- The Town Hall: Distinguished baroque building from the 18th century.
- The Basilica of Santa Maria: We are in front of the oldest church in the city that was built between the 14th and 16th centuries. It is really beautiful! 💒
Traveling Tip: During May, this neighborhood celebrates the Fiesta de las Cruces in style. You will find the streets more beautiful than ever thanks to the numerous floral crosses that adorn it.
WALKS ON THE EXPLANADA DE ESPAÑA.
More than 6 million red, white and black tiles simulating the undulation of the waves make up the liveliest promenade in the city.
A symbol where, daily, hundreds of people enjoy a long walk among rows of palm trees accompanied by the numerous handicraft stands and street artists that are located there.
Remember to come and admire the uniqueness of La Casa Carbonell, located at the beginning of the walk.
TAKE A REFRESHING SWIM AT THE POSTIGUET BEACH.
This great urban beach is a 5-minute walk from the city center.
With golden sand and a beautiful turquoise color in the water, this fabulous little piece of paradise has all the necessary services to spend a great day by the sea.
In June, the city celebrates its most important festival and does so in style: the famous Hogueras de San Juan. (considered of International Tourist Interest)
A magnificent display of fireworks, brass bands and monumental bonfires follow one another for a few days where this beach takes on special prominence on the night of June 24th thanks to the thousands of people who perform their little bonfires, rituals, and dances on the sand.
Traveling tip: If you like beaches, don’t miss Playa de San Juan (6 kilometers of sand and sea with a wonderful promenade about 15 minutes by car from the center of Alicante) and Playa de la Albufereta (a small cove of about 500 meters of quiet coastline 10 minutes from the center).
VISIT THE MARINA OF ALICANTE.
