When travelling as a family, children’s activities are one of the indispensable elements – they are on holiday too! 😅 Now, it’s not always easy to find activities and things to do…
Small but tough, like the youngest members of the family, the island of La Palma has a lot to offer, both to adults and children. This list includes a handful of top activities for children on the island of La Palma. Enjoy them!
1. Camping at the Refugio del Pilar.
One of the unquestionable treasures of the beautiful island is its network of footpaths, which enables us to behold it’s admirable landscapes and immerse ourselves into nature. With children you can not always follow certain routes or sections, but getting close to nature is always a good idea.
We would recommend a campsite in an emblematic place in the heart of the island: The Refugio del Pilar. Surrounded by pine groves and nestled at the foot of the Birigoyo, between the Cumbre Nueva and the Cumbre Vieja, it has all the necessary facilities: camping area, children’s playground, water, showers, barbecue?
Are you looking for activities for children? You don’t really feel like preparing a bonfire, finding mushrooms ( seasonal, of course!) on the self-guided path or observing the sky setting with stars… Well, you can explore the Volcanoes route. Here’s a link to the island’s recreational areas.
2. A swim in the natural pools (Charco Azul and La Fajana).
Courtesy doesn’t mean you”re not brave. Although the delightful natural pools of La Palma are suitable for romantic visits by couples or for complete relaxation, there is also room for children to enjoy them.
In La Palma there are two “puddles” (which is how these natural pools at the edge of the sea are usually called) you should ensure you visit them: Charco Azul (in San Andrés and Sauces) and La Fajana (in Barlovento), both in the north of the island.
Peaceful, well-equipped and with all the services, they are a perfect place for kids to take a dip, enjoy their games outdoors and who knows, stay a while (and consequently, we too).
YOU CAN’ T AFFORD TO MISS: When it comes to bathing, La Palma doesn’t make it any easier. Charco Verde is the perfect beach for kids. Easily accessible, with calm waves and set in a natural environment.
3. Let’s see dolphins!.
Or whales or whatever. If your children are a little older they will be delighted with the cetaceans that can be seen with some ease in the western part of La Palma waters. Without a doubt, one of the best activities for children on the island.
Tazacorte is the starting point par excellence for this type of excursions, which usually include something to eat and the option of doing some snorkeling. Some are designed with children in mind and it’s so wonderful.
Imagine your children’s excitement when they discover the fins of one of these animals and their expressions when they see the back of a pilot whale or sperm whale. We can assure you that this is one of those truly worthwhile experiences.
REMEMBER THAT: Whale watching excursions does not stick with the animals at a scheduled time and place. We want to say that maybe you will not even see a sad wreckfish. It is advisable to inform the little ones to avoid disappointments…
4. Caving in the Cueva de las Palomas.
If your children are one of those energetic ones and you have to find them outdoor games for children because their energy overflows, we would recommend a unique activity: penetrate into the depths of the earth visiting the volcanic tube of the Cueva de las Palomas.
The Ékalis company has created this exciting route adapted for adults or children depending on the participants. This route itself does not present any great difficulty, but the unusual experience of walking underground often drains the strength of even the most resilient participants.
The journey through this impressive gallery originating from volcanic activity in 1949 between the villages of Todoque and Las Manchas takes about two and a half hours, but it remains engraved in the memory forever. These are really entertaining activities for children… and adults.
5. Between bananas and ducks.
Looking for activities for children we have found one that I personally won’t want to miss: a visit to an ecological banana plantation. The plantation is called Platanológico and is very close to Los Llanos de Aridane.
This is a perfect occasion to approach the most representative crop of the islands in a leisurely way. And not only that. In this “edible forest” they are committed to biodiversity, responsible consumption and the ecological management of resources. If you are looking for activities for alternative children, this is the one for you.
Apart from seeing firsthand how it is possible to produce food in another way, children are delighted to walk under the huge plants and see a lot of animals camping or practically in the plantation.
In La Palma you will find these and many other activities for children that will make your visit a complete experience!
And you can combine these activities perfectly with other experiences, such as walking among linden trees and vineyards, as well as following in the footsteps of the palm shepherds or enjoying their starry nights.
